Nested just outside of Boise, Bogus Basin is a hidden gem for alpine and nordic skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and fat-tire biking. Quaint, secluded, and beautiful, it offers year-round outdoor play at an accessible price point for couples and families alike.
The Drive
Distance: ~20 miles northeast from downtown Boise, ID.
Drive Time: ~40 minutes (dependent on winter weather, snow conditions, and traffic).
Route Details: The drive takes you up a narrow, winding 2-way mountain pass. Drive carefully and ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter roads if visiting during the ski season.
Where to Stay
On-Mountain & Ski-In/Ski-Out:
Pioneer Condominiums: Bogus Basin doesn't own overnight lodging, but they partner with Pioneer Condominiums for convenient ski-in/ski-out access to the main lodge.
Vacation Rentals: Several privately owned cabins and condos are available nearby via Airbnb and VRBO.
Staying in Downtown Boise:
Our Choice: We opted to stay in downtown Boise to keep costs down, enjoy broader dining access, and celebrate our anniversary. We stayed at The Anniversary Inn, which made for a fun, unique stay! Staying downtown made sense for us since we rented gear at the mountain rather than hauling our own.
Family-Friendly Recommendations: If you’re visiting with kids, consider The Grove Hotel or The Riverside Hotel for comfortable, family-centric amenities close to downtown attractions.
Parking
What to Expect: Parking is easily the most challenging part of visiting Bogus Basin.
Tips: There are several parking lots, but as lower lots fill up, you'll end up parking significantly further from the mountain and main lodge. Because the lots are uniquely shaped, double parking can be an issue. Arrive early in the morning to secure a spot closer to the lodge and avoid long walks in heavy winter gear.
Simplot Lodge, Dining & Amenities
The Simplot Lodge serves as the central hub for your day on the mountain. While modest in size, it has everything you need to gear up and refuel.
Lodge Store: A small but well-stocked store covering basic mountain gear and forgotten essentials. We ended up picking up extra ski socks and a face cover here—prices are slightly higher given the location, but very reasonable for a resort store.
Bogus Creek Grill: Located right inside the lodge, offering classic American comfort foods at budget-friendly prices. Expect solid meal variety, including fresh fruit and yogurt—a surprisingly refreshing option after a few hours on the mountain!
JR’s T-Bar: A dedicated bar area inside the lodge providing extra adult seating and craft beverages.
Double R Ranch BBQ Smokehouse: Located just outside the Simplot Lodge doors. While we didn't stop to eat here on this visit, the aroma alone makes it worth a visit on your trip!
Skiing & Equipment Rentals
Beginner-Friendly Access: We spent our trip on the slopes celebrating our anniversary—and as a first-time skier, the setup was fantastic. Beginner passes are exceptionally affordable compared to major commercial resorts.
Lessons: Bogus offers both private and group lessons for all ages. Bonus tip: Check their website schedule ahead of time, as a complimentary group lesson is often included with the purchase of a beginner pass!
Learning Hill: The designated beginner hill is gentle, spacious, and extremely well laid out for getting your bearings—whether you're an adult beginner or bringing young kids onto the snow for the first time.
Rentals: You can rent all necessary ski and snowboard gear directly through the on-site rental office quickly and affordably.
